3-Lesson Watercolor Workshop: Lesson Plan
Lesson 1 – Foundations of Watercolor & Essential Techniques
This introductory session focuses on understanding the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Students learn how to work with professional art materials, prepare their workspace, and practice core techniques such as washes, gradients, layering, and controlled brushwork. Emphasis is placed on building dexterity, confidence, and familiarity with the medium. Participants complete small exercises designed to strengthen hand-eye coordination and develop essential painting skills to use in the next 2 lessons.
Lesson 2 – Nature Studies: Trees, Leaves & Fall Season Expressive Color Exploration
In this lesson students will dive more deeply into color theory and apply foundational techniques to create expressive nature-based compositions. Through guided demonstrations, participants explore color mixing, warm and cool palettes, and how to capture the character of trees, foliage, and seasonal landscapes. Students practice observing shapes, simplifying forms, and using watercolor’s transparency to build depth. The goal is to help painters translate natural subjects into vibrant, harmonious artwork.
Lesson 3 – Creative Confidence Painting Watercolors: Bringing Detail into Your Work
The final session introduces strategies for adding detail, textures, structure, and composition to watercolor paintings. Students will apply all the techniques learned and color theory. By the end of the workshop, participants will combine techniques from all three lessons with their unique style and personal artistic expression to create a Final Painting that reflects their growing skill and creative voice.
